My fourth and last game at Ropecon was against Mikko Posio with legion. For me, the choice in favor of Damiano was pretty much automatic against legion. Mikko dropped Kallus1.
His list:
Kallus
- Blightbringer
2 x 10 Swordsmen
2 x 10 Legionnaires + UA
2 Hellmouths
I won the roll off and elected to go first. Mikko chose he side where a forest on his side makes for a great place to hide hellmouth.
He deploys totally symmetrically. My deployment is almost symmetrical, with the exception of Trenchers, who are on my right flank. The plan here is to utilize their shooting to clear this flank, while the heavies go to the middle and kill Blightbringer.
In my first turn, Trenchers go up and kill two tentacles. Those who can't reach dig in. Kell comes closer and puts 3 damage into the maw. I advance a unit of halberdiers behind the trenchers, and another one (with Death March) in the center. A nomad is sent towards the let zone to contest it. The rest of the heavies are in the middle and right-ish.
I haven't made a picture after his turn, but he killed a few trenchers and a few halberdiers from the left unit with blightbringer, and also spread his right-side swordsmen around, threatening my zone.
In return, I take destroy hellmouth with Kell, and then put deadeye on the trenchers to kill off all buth three of the swordsmen here. I kill all tentacles on the right and contest with halberdiers and nomad. My heavies advance onto the center behind a screen of halberdiers.
Mikko shows me that I made a mistake on the left flank. He kills a good number of halberdiers with Blightbringer, and then with the newly spawned tentacle drags my nomad to the maw, almost killing it. Swordsmen finish him, as well as the rest of the models in the zone. In the middle, Legionnaires mini-feat and proceed to remove most of my halberdiers. Swordsmen on the right remove one trencher. Kallus feats. Legion scores one point in the left zone.
For some time, I contemplate a way to remove Blightbringer this turn but just can't find enough things to destroy enough legionnaires blocking the way. So instead I go for desroying as many of them as possible (and as many resulting succubi). This plans involves several Thresher attacks and all damiano's focus except the one for deadeye. Orin contributes too, with chain lightning. The result is that there are two legionnaires remaining, and all right-side swordsmen are dead. I feated. I also score a point (contested his zone with a halberdier).
Again, I forgot to make a picture after his turn (time pressure gets high). What he does is move blightbringer into my heavies and tries to do some damage. Green mangler only has 2 boxes left, and they are in his right hand. Hellmouth is not used, because I am currently immune to drags. The red mangler is attacked by some swordsmen and succubi. Score 2-2.
This time, I get my heavies with full focus on the blightbringer and take him down. I use the rest of attacks to kill some infantry. Orin was helping too. Score 3-3.
On the photo you don't see because it's not there, he comes in with his swordsmen and takes down the red mangler and green mangler. This happens after the purple nomad is destroyed by Hellmouth. A lot of models are clustered around the former position where Mangler was. Score 4-4.
I use Dead Eye and Orin, as well as the nomad's focus to kill as many models as I can. Before the activation of the halberdiers, all his models except the maw are dead. So I use the halberdiers to contest his zone. Two halberdiers are also used to block the drag for the Nomad. Kell starts running to where he will see Hellmouth. Score becomes 4-5 in my favor, and this is turn 6 now.
In his 6th turn, Kallus moves around the forest towards the halberdier and kills it, then casts Eruption on one of my halberdiers and kills both. A tentacle drags the nomad to his death. Score goes to 6-7.
Kallus is in the open, so I decide to put a few attacks into him. Kell shoots twice, then trenchers with Dead Eye combine a shot, and Kallus bites the dust.
Analysis
A very grindy and enjoyable game and I am not 100% sure about all results and conclusions. Anyways, here are some thoughts:
1. It is unwise to put heavies within Hellmouth's threat range.
2. Trenchers are golden in this match up.
3. Halberdiers are better used against Swordsmen than Legionnaires. Heavies are better used against legionnaires, and they don't suffer that much from them (swordsmen hit harder).
4. Tentacles can be used to remove dig in, allowing Blightbringer blasts to do a lot of damage. Always need to keep that in mind.
