Ropecon 2017 game 03: Damiano vs Twins

My third game at Ropecon was against Konsta Sulkanen with legion. Normally, the only casters from legion I face locally are Fyanna, Abby2 and Thagrosh 1. I knew nothing about the casters Konsta has, but in general I have had success with Damiano against legion, with halberdiers being able to perform really well.

So, I dropped Damiano into the match up and got Twins as the opposition.

Here is the list:

Oracles of Annihilation
Saeryn & Rhyas
- Nephilim Protector
- 2 Raeks
- 2 Scytheans
- Seraph
- Shredder
Free forsaken
Free Shepherd
Shepherd
Hex Hunters + Bayal
Blackfrost Shard

You can see that this is not an optimized list. It uses non-flying beasts, and it does not use sorceresses. This is because the models are still in painting.

I think I won the roll-off and elected to go second, in order to start scoring (this Damiano list likes the double circle scenarios). I also liked the forests in a protective position that would allow me to contest the left zone with a nomad, and possibly score a flag with a solo at some point. The infantry would be there to dominate the right zone.

I didn't make a picture after Legion's turn 1, but he ran with his hex hunters and almost everything else. Raeks went around the flanks. In return, I cast Sure Foot and dead eye on the trenchers and killed all hex hunters. I directed a nomad to the left to play games with Raek and/or contest the zone, and I spread my halberdiers all around the right zone. The ones lying down are in such a position because of the 3D hill, they are supposed to be standing fully on the hill in the place where their bases touch it.

Very little happens during Legion's turn. He kills a trencher and a halberdier, advances the main line a bit, and also continues to envelop the flanks with Raeks. Rhyas is in a position where she can be charged by 4 trenchers.

I attacks Rhyas after casting Death March and Dead Eye on the trenchers, and it turns out that this was a bait. I only hit with one attack, and she ripostes after each one, killing a trencher. One attack connects and the damage is transferred, while the trencher is killed in return. I also charge several halberdiers into targets of opportunity, and tie up the right Raek. Due to my sloppy positioning of Damiano, the blue nomad can't get into the zone to contest and still be powered up next turn. One thing I do is present the green Nomad for exchange.

Some halberdiers and trenchers die, a Scythean takes the nomad, and Rhyas retreats a bit.

I kill the right Raek with halberdiers, take out two solos in the middle, move trenchers away to free the way for my heavies and go in on his heavies (this is my feat turn). Green mangler kills the first Scythean with focus left over, red mangler Road to Wars (I cast it this turn and gave one focus to each mangler and one to purple nomad) and charges and kills second Scythean, blue nomad road to wars and kills some Black Frost Shard guys, which allows green mangler to back up. Orin runs to score the flag, while halberdiers score the zone.

I lead very strongly on both attrition and scenario now. I was keeping damiano more than 14" away from Rhyas, of course.

One thing I didn't know, though, is that as long as Saeryn can run into within 2" of the caster, there is an assassination run. In the last picture, Damiano and Saeryn are less than 18" apart (more than 17" though).

So, Saeryn is placed by the Seraph, then twins activate and Saeryn runs, taking one free strike from a mangler (protector allows her to ignore the first one) and transferring the damage to the Seraph. Then, Rhyas charges a target to get back into formation and feats. They swap places. Rhyas kills Damiano. All it would have taken to prevent it is to activate the purple nomad and put him base to base with the green mangler or even the red mangler.

Analysis

The mistakes I were making here are purely from the lack of knowledge of the opposing caster. Two lessons:
1. Now I know the trick to Twins assassination.
2. Now I know that it is not a good idea to attack Rhyas with infantry, unless it has really good MAT (halberdiers could be good with Death March, going to MAT10 on charges - there is only one Retaliatory Strike from Ornery possible).
