I just lost a game against one of the Cryx players in this tournament, and here I am in game five, facing another Cryx player: Rafal Anusiak from War Room PL.
Rafal has a Ghost Fleet and a Dark Host list. We discuss things before the game. Rafal sees that I am not a big fan of Ghost Fleet in general and suggests to play Dark Host, just to see how it goes. Plus, he says, he suspects that it works even better than Ghost Fleet.
Rafal's list:
Dark Host
Gaspy 3
- Cankerworm
- Inflictor
- 2 Stalkers
Free Wraith Engine
Free Tartarus
Darrag Wrathe
Max Bane Knights
Max Bane Warriors with free UA
Rafal deploys his warriors behind the clouds on the right and knights on the other flank. I skew hard to the right, thinking that I can soften knights up a bit with shooting and then try to clear that flank with halberdiers.
Bane knights get Cloak of Ash, granting them concealment and thus stealth. Everything runs up.
Since I can't shoot Bane Knights, I run forward very cautiously. Two talons prepare to possibly contest his left zone.
Rafal floods the board, and also removes my Blue Nomad.
I feat and remove the Battle Engine, and also do some work on his knights. However, I don't have enough to kill his bane warriors or to get to many jacks (left Stalker is killed, though; the right one actually went away - he forgot to activate him and I allowed to do that before I started to move any of my models).
He still has some warriors that can come to my jacks, and he cripples both of them. He also feats. Gaspy walks into the zone to open scoring.
I struggle to get more work done. Some knights and banes are killed, as well as the worm. He gets a ton of souls. I contest with a talon.
One Hex Blast, a few jacks and one Tartarus later, Magnus is dead.
Analysis
I really don't know what I could have done differently. I might have been able to grind it out a bit more by hiding Magnus, but it feels that the attrition was always in his favor (even my feat didn't help enough), and also I had no way to meaningfully stop him from scoring. Maybe concentrating all halberds on one flank here was a mistake.
